Common Poker Tournament Formats Explained
Understand freezeouts, re-entry, rebuy, bounty, shootout, satellite, turbo, and sit-and-go formats before reading an event’s rules.
Read the rules, not only the format name
A format label is shorthand. The official rules must define entry price, eligibility, starting stack, blind schedule, breaks, late registration, re-entry, prizes, cancellation, ties, disconnects, and disputes. Two events using the same label can operate differently.

Operational rules that matter
- How eligibility and age are checked.
- Whether purchase is required and whether any no-purchase route exists.
- What happens after a disconnect, outage, cancellation, or duplicate registration.
- How bots, collusion, multi-accounting, and real-time assistance are investigated.
- Who receives disputes and how appeals work.
BOOF tournament status
No public BOOF tournament engine, registration system, schedule, or prize flow was verified. A community launch should default to a no-prize play-test session and must not be marketed as a tournament until the engine, official rules, eligibility controls, and dry run exist.
Account for total cost and duration
Re-entry and rebuy structures can multiply the initial cost. Fast blind schedules can also compress decision time. Set a maximum total spend and end condition before registration.
An event label does not establish eligibility or player protection. Verify the official rules and available responsible-gaming controls, and skip the event when either is missing or unclear.
